MASSIVE BLOODLETTING

Once in a great while, the curtain is drawn back and the insides are splayed open for all to see. The Artful Writer does it on a regular basis. If you want to know what first-tier writers who have everything they ever dreamed of argue about, and how brutal they can be, check this out….

P.S. Reserve a half hour and read the whole thing. It’s worth it.

  1. Kind of makes me think that if I were in that upper echelon of scriptwriters, I probably wouldn’t have many professional friends – especially if they treated one another with as much bile or contempt. That’s 45 minutes of my life I’ll never get back… as fascinating as it was to peak behind the curtain.

Perhaps someday I’ll know what true success as a screenwriter is all about. I can certainly do without the melodrama and spite – guess I’ll be an island unto myself.

  2. They are responding to a very difficult situation: in mainstream Hollywood, writers generally have very little control and are systematically treated as fungible. Even the writer’s ally, the WGA, has arbitration rules that openly accept this fate. (Imagine a novelist or playright being fired from his own work.) When you make it, you will be treated that way, too. Given this basic truth about screenwriting, passionate writers – even very successful passionate writers – are bound to have strong, heartfelt differences about how to face it. I just enjoy having a front row on the conversation.

  3. Thank you for pointing this out. For an aspiring screenwriter, it’s good to know what’s out there and what to expect.

  4. lol….I got about halfway through this the other day and my brain was aching…eventually had to skip to the bottom to see if they kissed and made up – and I think they did.

  5. Not often are their more heated debates from opponents…especially when they’re on the same side.

But an interesting and useful insight to the struggles we all face, and how many choose to go about them.

  6. It’s an interesting & informative debate over there. In between the venom they cover a lot of issues we writers need to know about. And they’re still at it. One thread is past 400 posts!

I’m only skimming now. As informative and bitchily entertaining as some of the posts are, i reached my limit around post #200.
