WIKI, ANYONE?

Wikipedia LogoHow about a screenwriting wiki?
If you don’t know what a wiki is, think wikipedia. It is a generation beyond blogging; no ego at the helm. The content is provided by the community of users. The more passionate and interested the community, the more complete and useful the wiki. Sound like the community of screenwriters? Let me know.

– What would you like to see in a wiki? (Suggest some topics.)

– Who would you like to be able to contribute? (Everyone? Working writers only? Other?)

– Are you willing to contribute qualified content?

Prepare for the launch (soon)….

  1. I think that would be a great idea…

One topic to start off with could be the story arcs and a comparison of all the different theories that are out there.

Where the experts say the different plot points (etc.) should be and why.

  2. I’ve been thinking about doing this for about a year now. I’ve got pages and pages of ideas for Wiki articles about screenwriting, and how to promote and engage users.

If you’d like some help setting it up, email me at the email address I’ve listed for this comment.

  3. Please go on with that idea, it would be great to have such a thing and i think everyone should be able to contribute (but a few are responsible for quality management)…

  4. John August tried that on his website but it didn’t work out. Not enough people contributing I think. You should ask him about it.

  5. I love John August’s blog but I’m not familiar with his wiki. This wiki will not be tied to my blog. It will be its own entity for everyone to share, make contributions and own as a community.

  6. I think this is a great idea. The table of contents of a few screenwriting books would be great indicators of what the content should be. It might be a good idea to start with a few rather narrow topics and then allow the community to expand it at their will.

I’m not sure about whether people should have to qualify to contribute. The idea of the wiki is that the community prevails. One person can add something that’s wrong, but the larger community will correct it. But in this case, we’re talking about specialty knowledge held by a relatively small group who could be outnumbered by the general population. So the wiki could end up being very wrong.

But what an interesting project to undertake.

  7. I’d *love* to see that. And I think that the wiki’s audience would police itself much of the time; us newbies probably wouldn’t try to contradict the pros that we’d be coming to learn from. But in case trolls might come a trolling’ maybe there should be manual registration so that only those really interested in screenwriting could post?
